SUMMARY:Make it Wild: Weave a Krokbragd Mug Rug with Ingrid Wobst
DESCRIPTION:Have fun weaving a vibrant and useful Krokbragd ‘mug rug’ on a 4-shaft table loom. Looms\, wool\, and tools will be provided by the instructor. No prior weaving experience needed. Ingrid Wobst will lead two classes (limited to 4 participants each) on July 19\, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. \nKrokbragd (‘crooked path’ in Norwegian) is a traditional Scandinavian weft-faced weaving structure. The dense and sturdy nature of Krokbragd textiles makes them ideal for rugs\, table linens\, and wall hangings. \nA life-long knitter and sewer\, Wobst began weaving 15 years ago and focuses on creating functional textiles using high quality fibers. Since moving to Jackson from Albuquerque in 2021\, she has been leading weaving workshops at the Art Association of Jackson using rigid heddle and 4-shaft looms. “It is wonderful to share my love of weaving with other fiber enthusiasts. Everyone leaves with a beautiful handmade textile and\, most importantly\, an appreciation for the skill and time needed to produce quality woven items\,” says Wobst. \nRegister now!

SUMMARY:Artist Residency Program with Doris Florig
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with our summer community exhibition\, A Conceptual Thread\, the Museum is hosting a mini artist-in-residence program with fiber artist Doris Florig\, an artist featured in the exhibit. During the residency\, Florig will demonstrate tapestry weaving and speak with visitors about her methods and materials. The residency will take place Monday\, July 7\, through Friday\, July 11\, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Sullivan Hall. Each day\, Florig will weave her tapestry inspired by the Absaroka Mountain Range\, while inviting visitors to ask questions. Her program will be inclusive of all ages and is free to visitors with an admission ticket or Museum membership. \nThere will also be an opportunity for visitors to contribute to Florig’s “Mother Tree” project. The “Mother Tree” is a collaborative\, ongoing project of people working together\, engaging in fiber arts while learning to protect and care for forests. Visitors are encouraged to engage in tactile experiences such as weaving\, needle felting\, spinning\, and poetry to contribute to the “Mother Tree.” During her residency at the Museum\, visitors will create a panel of the tree trunk that will eventually be stitched to other trunk panels to create the large cohesive “tree” relief sculpture. \nSchedule of residency: \nMonday\, Day 1: Weaving People Together – An introduction to Florig’s “Mother Tree” project. The project\, made of various fiber arts\, is a communally made artwork. Visitors will be invited to add different elements to the “Mother Tree.” \nTuesday\, Day 2: Needle Felting Experience – Needle felting is a fiber art process where wool fibers are intermeshed using a special kind of needle. Visitors will learn how to make felted pinecones and wool branches to be added onto the “Mother Tree.” \nWednesday\, Day 3: Finger Weaving – Finger weaving is a type of textile art that does not require any loom\, needles\, or hooks. It is an Indigenous practice of the Pacific Northwest and New Zealand. Visitors will learn this technique and then add their creations to the “Mother Tree.” \nThursday\, Day 4: Spinning and Poetry in collaboration with Matt Daly of Jackson Hole Writers – Visitors will learn how to twist raw fibers into yarn using a drop spindle. Matt Daly will give a reading of his poem about the “Mother Tree” and provide visitors with a woven poem prompt to respond to the “Mother Tree.” \nFriday\, Day 5: Guided walk through A Conceptual Thread – Florig will give a guided tour of the exhibition\, giving visitors insight into the different techniques the artists used to create these works of art. Public tours will be 30 minutes long starting at 12 p.m.\, 1 p.m.\, and 2 p.m. \nAbout the artist: \nDoris Florig began a lifelong quest seeking out people with a cultural history of textile arts starting in the early 70s. Through travel\, teaching\, and exhibiting\, her weaving art skills have evolved like our changing environment. With a focus on Plein Air\, Doris weaves people and nature together.

SUMMARY:Community Send-Off of "The Great Elephant Migration"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a community send-off as we bid farewell to The Great Elephant Migration. This exhibition features 32 life-size elephants\, sculpted from Lantana camara\, on the Museum’s outdoor Sculpture Trail. Each elephant is a replica of an elephant living in Tamil Nadu\, in southern India\, sculpted by local Indigenous artisans known as The Real Elephant Collective. \nElephants have matriarchal structures\, with each herd led by an older\, experienced female\, so it is only natural that The Great Elephant Migration is a women-led conservation effort. Made up of influential women across diverse fields\, including environmentalists\, philanthropists\, writers\, and creatives\, the Matriarchy is rallying support for human-wildlife coexistence alongside the elephants and will lead the final leg of The Great Elephant Migration to the finishing line of Los Angeles. \nFrom Jackson\, conservation leaders\, NGO partners\, matriarchs\, and Indigenous representatives from Blackfeet Nation\, Kenya\, India\, and beyond will embark on a 1\,000-mile road trip to Los Angeles through Salt Lake City\, Zion National Park\, Las Vegas\, and Joshua Tree. The elephants will travel in a decorated fleet inspired by vibrant Indian Lorry art. This final stretch is both a moving artwork and a ceremonial act\, fusing Indigenous knowledge\, contemporary design\, and sacred storytelling to honor the migratory journeys of animals in a human-shaped world. \nWe need your help to decorate the transport trucks! Add your creative touch to the vehicles that will carry the elephants on their voyage—transforming them into rolling tributes to wildlife\, art\, and adventure. Enjoy lemonade and chai as we come together as a community to send off the elephants as they embark on the final leg of their journey! \nThe event takes place outdoors\, rain or shine\, in the Amphitheater outside at the Museum entrance. \nImage credit: “The Great Elephant Migration” artwork by Rebecca Campbell.

SUMMARY:Plein Air Fest\, Etc.
DESCRIPTION:Nearly 50 invited artists are given one day to create new masterpieces en plein air (outside). They paint from the National Museum of Wildlife Art’s Sculpture Trail with stupendous views overlooking the National Elk Refuge. All visitors are welcome to watch the painters\, and collectors are invited to browse and bid on the fresh artworks. All proceeds will benefit the Museum and participating artists. Enjoy free admission from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. \nTwo participation categories for the artists: plein air and al fresco. \nThe plein air category allows artists to paint any regional scene of their choice\, and they may begin their painting anywhere in the vicinity. All artists will be on the Sculpture Trail by 10 a.m. to finish their piece live and in person. Al fresco is interpreted more broadly\, where artists enjoy painting outside using reference photos of any subject. The “Best in Show” award winner will be picked from the plein air category\, while the al fresco category is not judged. \nLearn more here.

SUMMARY:Blessing of the Elephants – Community Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, May 30 from 5 – 7 p.m. for the community exhibition opening of The Great Elephant Migration. This is a FREE community event. \nThis installation will feature 30 life-size elephants\, sculptured from Lantana camara\, on the Museum’s Sculpture Trail. Each elephant is a replica of an elephant living in Tamil Nadu\, in southern India\, sculpted by local Indigenous artisans known as The Real Elephant Collective. This campaign\, launched in July 2024 in Newport\, RI\, began with 100 magnificent Indian elephants migrating across the United States to share their coexistence story with the world. The Great Elephant Migration supports conservation NGOs around the world who have found ways to live alongside lions\, leopards\, elephants\, and some of the planet’s most vulnerable animals. As the elephants travel the world\, they will tell the story of Asia’s wild elephants and the Indigenous communities living alongside them\, where people and elephants coexist in the densest populations in the world. During the opening event at the Museum\, welcome the herd while enjoying free vegetarian samosas from Everest Momo Shack + complimentary cocktails or nonalcoholic drinks from Bar-SIP-Bar. Weather permitting\, the food and beverage will be served in the roundabout on the South end of the Sculpture Trail. \nAcclaimed Blackfeet painter and ledger artist Terrance Guardipee will lead a blessing of the elephants. Attendees are encouraged to explore the Sculpture Trail to see our other outdoor exhibition\, Prismatic Menagerie: Origami-Inspired Sculptures by Hacer. Participants are also welcome to explore our indoor exhibits\, including the summer exhibitions Wildlife Photographer of the Year and A Conceptual Thread. \n\nVegetarian samosas from Everest Momo Shack (first 300 people)\nCocktails from Bar-SIP-Bar (one drink per person\, first 300 people\, 21+)\nNon Alcoholic Drinks (all ages)\nBlessing of the Elephants by Blackfeet artist Terrance Guardipee\n\nThis event is generously sponsored by the Jackson Hole Travel & Tourism Board and Long\, Reimer\, Winegar. SUMMARY:Watercolors & Waterways – Community Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, November 1 from 5  – 7 p.m. for the community exhibition opening of Tony Foster: Watercolour Diaries from the Green River. This is a FREE community event. \nThe Green River is a major tributary of the Colorado River and runs through the states of Wyoming\, Colorado\, and Utah. Beginning in the Wind River Mountains\, the Green River holds a special spot in the hearts of those living near the Colorado Plateau\, where the river has carved a breathtaking landscape of canyons that have lush covering of greenery at their base. Tony Foster’s watercolor paintings\, with notes\, diaries\, maps\, and symbolic objects captures the majesty of this local landscape from its geological prehistory to the story of Native American and Western Settlement. \nTony Foster\, the artist featured in Tony Foster: Watercolour Diaries from the Green River\, will be in attendance at the event. Foster became fascinated with the 50-million-year-old Green River fossilized fish when he first saw them in 1985. It was from these small special objects that he comprised the idea to make a group of artworks about the Green River. \n\nPresentation in the Cook Auditorium at 5:30 p.m. followed by a short Q&A from exhibition artist Tony Foster\nWatercolor crafts\nTacos for purchase from Street Tacos

Thank you for your support! \nAbout the artist:  \nTim Musso is an artist and naturalist who exhibits his work internationally. The themes of his artwork are inspired by remote cross-country backpacking trips around the world. It was on one of these trips in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge that he first encountered the Arctic tern. His fascination with nature\, innate curiosity\, and preferred medium of relief printing coalesced in the creation of his first picture book\, Chasing the Sun.
